WhatsApp is introducing a new feature to improve user experience: a dedicated Peripherals section in the Linked Devices area. According to WABetaInfo, this feature lets devices connect automatically to a WhatsApp account without needing a QR code or verification code, happening quietly in the background.
Peripheral devices differ from connected ones as they require no manual pairing. These are designed to link silently once the necessary app is installed and account criteria are met, facilitating a quick, user-free connection. This functionality suits accessories and wearables that depend on smooth syncing.
Apple Watch Is Currently the Only Supported Peripheral
Currently, WhatsApp supports only the Apple Watch as a peripheral device. Once the app is installed on the watch and is part of Apple’s connected ecosystem, it will autonomously form a connection with WhatsApp. This results in the Apple Watch appearing as its own entry under Linked Devices, joining other linked clients like Macs.
Each peripheral entry displays details like the device’s name and its last active time, mirroring the format used for other linked devices and ensuring all connected hardware remains visible.
No Manual Disconnect Option Inside WhatsApp
Unlike other linked devices, users can’t remove a peripheral device directly via WhatsApp settings. To sever the link, the corresponding app must be uninstalled from the device. For instance, taking WhatsApp off an Apple Watch stops message syncing and removes it from the linked devices list.
While this adds an extra step, it guarantees that the device won’t inadvertently sync messages, maintaining user control over their connections.
Improved Transparency and Account Awareness
